Be more like Ted

Early this week, a patient came in and told me that he read my last newsletter. The topic of that one focused on the fact that we would all be in a better place if we spent more time listening and less time talking. He thanked me for writing it, and then told me that it reminded him of his favorite scene from Ted Lasso...

The mere mention of that show made me laugh out loud. We loved that show. As a matter of fact, it has been one of our favorite shows to watch together. If you have not seen it, we would both recommend it highly. There are moments that will make you laugh out loud. Others that will tug at your heartstrings. Some that will make you angry. All in all, it is a great show that is well worth your time.

During one of the most memorable scenes in the show, Ted Lasso, who is an American football coach who is brought to England to coach an English soccer team, is playing a game of darts with a lot on the line. (I put the clip in the box below if you'd like to see the scene.) In the conversation during the game, he quotes Walt Whitman. He says "Be curious, not judgemental." The patient told me that this quote was what popped into his head when he read my last newsletter.

Unfortunately, it appears that that quote is frequently misattributed to Walt Whitman, and it seems that no one is truly sure who is responsible for the statement. Regardless of who said that actual quote or where it came from it still rings true to this day. If we would all just spend more time learning from others and their perspectives, our world would likely be a better place. Instead many of us are quick to judge others without any effort to understand why they may feel that way.

As the results from the elections roll in and the future leaders of our community, state, and country assume their positions, please remember that while you may not love the results of each election, each of those elected officials got the majority of the votes. While I may not like all of the choices that have been made to represent me, I find myself wondering why did the majority of the people who voted for this person choose them over the candidate that I preferred. I am choosing not to judge people for the decisions that they made, but finding that I am more curious as to why they felt that person was better for the job.

Being curious, and not judgemental is a much better way to go through life. Give it a shot. You may find that your stress levels go down!

I think during this week, we need to remember this quote from Ted Lasso too.
