Just Take A Breathe!
Tim Ferris recently released a new book titled Tools of Titans, that I recently picked up on the recommendation of a friend. (When I say recommendation, I mean that he stopped by the office and dropped off his copy for me to read!) The premise of the book is that Tim Ferris, who is famous for his 4-Hour Work Week, 4-Hour Body, and 4-Hour Chef books, has written about the most powerful moments of his conversations with influential people over the past several years. I am about 250 pages into this 600ish page book, so I am not even close to being done pulling nuggets from this book. In the first 250 pages, the biggest takeaway has been that so many of these giants practice some form of meditation! So, obviously, I felt the need to try this out!
Merriam-Webster defines meditate as “to spend time in quiet thought for religious purposes or relaxation.” Several people in the book (and some others outside of the book) recommended the Headspace App for your smartphone as a great place to start, so naturally, I downloaded it and got started immediately. I have to admit that I was not sure what to expect from my 10 minutes with Headspace, but I can honestly say that I felt much more relaxed and felt like I was more focused on the task at hand, whether it was in the office or at home. I was hooked at that point.
Now, this is not the meditation that is probably coming to your mind. You will not be sitting on the floor cross-legged, saying “Ohm” over and over again. You can sit just about anywhere to meditate. In the past four days, I have meditated in my living room, dining room, office, and even in my car! The only things that you will need is a place to sit, a smartphone/computer, and 10 minutes of time! The key is to set aside those 10 minutes of time every day to take care of yourself.
You have nothing to lose by giving it a shot!
Try it out and let us know what you think!
